The knocking could be the drop links in the front suspension - easy and cheap to replace.

They are a doddle as long as you have a Torx bit to hold the ball joint part at each end still whilst you undo the nut.

Jack up car, remove fr wheel, undo both ends of drop link, pull off, throw in bin.
Put on new one, do up, put wheel on, remove jack.
Repeat on other side.
Tell everyone it was such a hard job you now need a pint.....

Any Ideas what to do if the thread has gone on the torx bit, so it wont hold still whilst I undo the nut?

I had that problem on mine. I ended up using a nut splitter to get the nut off.

Failing that you could hacksaw the nut off?

Mine was also rusted and had to use mole grips. Two hours in the end. Why don't I just get a new car for once?

If not track rod end, common fault is the antiroll bar drop link about £20 for apair and change in less than 30 minutes.

I had same noise on my old one, turned out to be bottom ball joint, changed both sides to be safe, £50 each and quite easy to replace in the end, seemed to sharpen up the feeling in the corners as well that i always just put down to the picasso's smooth ride setup.
