Hi Techies. My aircon has stopped working, and just blows out air at ambiente temperature. Can anyone suggest tests that i can try before checking it into garage?
Thank you.

On tick-over when you switch the air con on can you hear the engine under load? Also listen for any gurgling noises. depending on the age of your vehicle it's more likely the system requires re-gassing. I don't know of any tests you can do I think most garages re-gas the system then look for leaks etc.

Also when idling and you turn the A/C on, step outside the car quickly (or have window down) and see if you can hear the compressor clutch kick in and take a look to see if the cooling fan activates. Could just need a gas top-up?

On the picasso when the aircon is switched on as well as the compressor clutch engaging the radiator cooling fan starts to run. If it doesn't then the system is not operating.

Possible that the fan relay is knackered or you have lost the gas from the system. A low pressue switch makes preventing the system operating.

Thanks to you all guys for these positive ideas for me to try. I did listen for AC clicking in, but in my stupidity did not do it at tickover.
Considering the age / mileage of the car, I am tempted to think it is more likely to be an electrical fault than the need for re gassing.
Having said that, the car was in last week (my thread "Car falling apart")and a supposed oil leak rectified. What little moisture was left, and the coating on the subframe shriveled up, I now suspect an AC leak. Will check later on and post results.
Thank you all again.

My Pic is an '06' 2006 and I had that re-gassed around 5 months ago and yet I have a '52' 2002 Peugeot 206 which has never been done so it's luck of the draw I reckon.

Do you have auto air-con.

if so there is switching module activated by the aircon brain. If not then it will be the unit on the fan housing. The Haynes maunual wiring diagrams show all of this. I no longer have a Pic or the haynes manual.

Well Gentlemen, took car into Walkers Citroën today, and told it needed re-gassed. They also did a pressure test and vacuum test afterwards, and no leaks found.
Had to call paramedics when they presented the bill.---over £70
Next car will have a sun roof and none of this high tech malarky.

I used Kwik Fit earlier this year...what a waste of money (£49)...and the guy had to phone another garage to ask how to set up the machine on my Volvo...better to go to a specialist

My current Xsara Pic has all that malarkey and a sunroof... still as many problems though lol!
So far.... Air Con needed regassing, engine cooling fan needed replacing, timing belt system f**ked up!, and now dmf and clutch needs replacing... thats all in 8months/12500miles on a 'modern, top-of-the-range' car Posted Image

Crazy, but for some reason still love the car and cant wait to get it back tomorrow Posted Image

I don't know why citron bother saying that they give a three year warranty on their cars---nearly everything that has required attention on this thing, i have had to pay for.
I honestly wish to God that some manufacturer would make a far more basic vehicle----what is not fitted can't go wrong. Maybe they should consider turning the clock back--I'm of an age that i remember when you got a very basic car, then the delux, then the "super" version, then the super dooper version. It was a real hobby saving up and fitting all the junk to suit the individuals own taste.
Air con may be a necessity in some countries, but not up here in the frozen north. LOL LOL.
Time for Brose now.

I'm with you on this one...I had a 1959 Morris Minor with trafficators...not a moments trouble with the car and serviced it myself...the car eventually rotted to death...wish I still had it

Although I would miss the comfort of a modern car...

Thank you.

do you hear a click from the relay when you turn it on? if not might be the relay.
my rear wiper and air con is not working due to the relay/fuse
might be worth taking it to a garage to get them to check it out.
good luck

Hi, in connection to the question about a/c, and i know that this has been talked about before on another forum, would servicing the a/c make any difference to the smell i'm getting inside the car? I've done the can inside(bomb) and also sprayed into the air intake with a bacteria spray, and through all of the air vents inside car.I have wondered if the drainage is blocked? Could anyone be able to help? Many thanks Andy

Was the aircon switched to recirculate when you did that? The best way to do it is by taking off the cover where the aircon filter is, removing the filter, and spraying there whilst the aircon is running.
