The one I'm referring to is the orange light on the left of the dashboard which actually spells out 'SERVICE'.

It suddenly came on out of the blue without an audible warning. The mileage is 47,159 and I last had it serviced a year ago, during which time it has covered less than 4,000 miles.

I can't reset the light by holding in the 000 button and the light stays on even when the ignition is switched off.

Could this be just a routine service warning or are there any other possible causes?

Edit: I thought I should add that there are no Citroen dealers conveniently close to me, so I had the last service carried out at an independent local garage. Could it simply be that they didn't reset the service indicator last time? They changed the fuel filter as specified, but when they showed it to me it looked so clean it could have been brand new.

Service interval is by time or distance. You don't say whether petrol or diesel, but petrol for instance for a 1.2 130 BHP is 12500 miles or 1 year. To reset service indicator as follows. With ignition OFF, press and hold 0000 button, still pressing turn on ign to first position, after a few seconds the miles to go to service will go to 12500
Now release the 0000 button.

Thank you. I thought I'd tried doing that last night, but for whatever reason, this time it worked. It does state that it's the 1.6 diesel in the title.
