Is it essential to replace the plastic surrounds at top and bottom of new front spring ???

What is the result of not fitting them??

I believe that the cups were added to later production cars cars to stop broken springs penetrating tyres, which had been happening to early cars..

I have tried to search the site for the posts that were made at the time, but it is not working.

Don't know whether it applies to all models, but remember the location of the 3 top bolts as one is a different length to the other two.  If you get it wrong you'll get a rattle from the suspension.

The plastic cups were fitted to stop a broken spring puncturing the tyre I had a new 8v pic and it was recalled to have the modification
Later I bought a new 16 v pic this had no cups fitted and it suffered a broken spring that punctured the tyre.
I had a really good moan at citroen uk as what goes through someone's mind to release a new model that a broken spring can puncture a tyre they said yes it's a known issue I asked if that was the case why a recall had not been issued given a recall was issued for the model before never got a satisfactory answer
But it was repaired at a very reasonable cost (two new suspension struts and new springs and a new tyre) + a voucher for £100 to put to for a service
We also have a C3 pic the voucher was put towards a service for that.
It appears that the known issue is that on cars driving in a country that's uses salt on the roads makes the springs susceptible to salt penitration/ corrosion.

Part of the problem is that springs are not coated like they used to be because the coating is toxic. It's not just Citroens that are affected, Ford's suffer too

Yes Sir Lancelot, we tested all the suspension and all was A1 OK. Took top bolts out and the longer one was indeed facing the mudwing.  Still the damned thing rattles. What actually causes the rattle though ???

After weeks of hard work I have eventually got back on this site----is there a problem with new entrants ?? Is Joe Blunt still on the go ????

A few of us still left but most seem to leave when they change to different manufacturer, hang around and see who pops in now and them.  The number of posts has diminshed either because less people are having problems with the newer vehicles.

So, no ideas what's causing this confounded rattle then !!!

Reckon the next step is to remove the under tray and see if anything hanging off the engine area.

Broke bracket on the exhaust heat shield. Allows heat shield to bang on body.
Loose lower engine mount bolt.
