My car insurance is due in January so I thought I'd give a couple of price comparison sites a whirl.

For the cover I wanted I got these quotes for identical input:

Prudential via Go-Compare

Mine is due 18th Jan, although we will be in OZ by then I have it insured, standing in the drive, for three months unused.

Todays quotes. I'm still waiting to hear from my current insurer, but I paid

This mirrors my experience, but with the added twist that identical information can produce differing results from the same insurer using the same price comparison site on each occasion I use them. I reckon there's a random element built in to some pricing algoriths, just to keep you (and other price comparison sites) on your toes.

I tried the dreaded Confused.com a couple of years ago and had the same experience as Lancelot! Within minutes, the company that gave the lowest quote were on the phone assuming that I was going to buy the policy with them! I phoned my existing insurer and quoted their on-line, lower price and they price matched it. :)

For the last 4 years I have had Churchill match their own internet price which has been 30 - 40% lower than the renewal premium. This year it's only 10% less and the Pru are lower still.

I used Go compare this year as they don't ring you, fed up being patronised when I give my age of 64 and SWMBO as 68.

Finally went with LVE good price on the wife's C3

A recommendation is always a good start so I tried Fortis and discovered they sell through brokers. According to their website my nearest broker is: No Results Found. Pity that.

Last year I was with Budget, never again, to contact them after joining involved an expensive call to India, this years best deal for me was the local Swinton broker.

I used GoCompare and Confused recently after having my renewal from the Halifax - who I couldn't beat over the last two years.

Echoing some of the comments, the reason I go online for a quote is that I don't want to talk to sales reps - and that's what happens the minute you click the 'go' button.

The 'best' quote, wasn't necessarily the 'best' deal. By the time you look at excesses, NCD protection etc. In the end I went for the 4th 'best' deal over the two sites and still saved over

Hope this helps:

Via MSE they recommend hitting they comparison sites in a specific order, just now its:
- Moneysupermarkert (~54% of Brokers and Direct Insurers)
- GoCompare (~53% (inc dups) of Brokers and Direct Insurers)
- Confused (~6% (inc dups) of Brokers and Direct Insurers)
- Comparethemeerkat (~8% (inc dups) of Brokers and Direct Insurers)

Other sites such as Direct Line and Aviva do not use comparison sites and are worth a separate check.

The MSE link is quite useful.
